In this book, we enjoy a triple feature excellent writing, fascinating stories, and learning the rich firsthand experience of an American contract helicopter pilot. Sobotta provides a humorous autobiography of his time working and flying on government missions in India, and documents his first year there when culture shock was at its strongest.

The bureaucratic process that pervades Indian society, shooting incidents, the trials of an ancient land with thousands of gods - plus other recipes for personal and professional disaster - vie with the tastes, sounds, and colors that make up India. This book reveals to listeners not just accounts of helicopter aviation or politics, but an immersion into a strange new world.

As the author traveled around different parts of India, rural and urban, interacting with its people, he slowly moved beyond colossal cultural differences to a real sense of the country and its incongruities and wonders. Listeners along for the ride can expect a journey filled with the turbulence that is India's psyche - but a journey also peppered with revealing and astonishing encounters that capture India's nuances and flavors.

Sobotta has a talent for storytelling and eliciting a chuckle, the result blends high flying adventure with expat experiences in a narrative that requires little familiarity with India or aviation. All that is required is an interest in this exotic country and in a rollicking good listen that candidly portrays a series of startling, often hilarious encounters with India's people, politics, and unique world.

India Charm Offensive An Expat Pilot Flies the South Asia Jungle (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Sobotta Doug Greene Books

"India Charm Offensive" is a wonderful story full of the sights, sounds, and smells of the infamous subcontinent.

As a writer myself and a pilot who has flown a fair bit in India, I enjoyed the stories and can say it's clearly written by a professional who has "been there." Mr. Sobotta's artful command of English, combined with his talent as a classic story teller makes this book a fine ride.

Perfect for anyone looking for a good adventure story or who wants to learn more about India...

Required reading for any non-Indian thinking about going to work and live in India...

All in all, a GREAT book.

India Charm Offensive An Expat Pilot Flies the South Asia Jungle (Audible Audio Edition) Michael Sobotta Doug Greene Books Reviews

A book not only for helicopter pilots or someone considering to move to the Indian subcontinent but for everyone who likes to read an entertaining, funny and sometimes unbelievable story based on facts rather than fiction. Michael Sobotta sure knows how to make you feel part of his 'adventure' in this country so foreign to us westerners.

A brilliant read from beginning to end.
This was an enjoyable read with plenty of action, humor, and even some romance! It provided great insight into a culture very different from my own, yet also illustrated the common humanity that unites us all. I was also intrigued to learn about a conflict I’d previously never heard of.
Pacing could have been improved in some sections, and some anecdotes could have been omitted or condensed to minimize redundancy of certain themes, but overall I really enjoyed the book. I look forward to reading more of Michael’s adventures!
Reading India Charm Offensive was similar to taking an action packed trip to India. Mike's adventures there were real and memorable. My wish was that I had been there with him as his flight attendant...totally unneeded but jam-packed with excitement every day. Let's hope he writes another book about his adventures after leaving India. If he does, I can barely wait to read it. After I read India Charm Offensive, I passed the book on to a neighbor who has and will once again be traveling to India. She definitely enjoyed the book, brought back memories. Another acquaintance is in line to read it. Come on, , ask Mike to write a sequel.

Originally I thought it would just be about flying and such. However, I checked the preview and ended up reading on Unlimited, and this is such a great read! The book is about the author's experiences in India, too, and his experiences are so detailed and interesting to read, as I've never been to India. And there are some parts that are so funny I'm still chucking about it. You'll see what I mean when you get to the parts about the monkeys, and the part about the persistent bellboy that has now probably learned his lesson about knocking. Great read!
I got into it but some may not. It's just a year in the life with no plot or resolution but I liked Michael and liked hanging out with him on his experiences. Also I have flown fixed wing charter and could relate to some of the job aspects common to all air taxi people but he did have more interesting characters and events than I ever did! I felt like I understood India much better after reading this, maybe better than going there and just hitting tourist sites and staying in Americanized hotels.
True story of helicopter pilot in India. Sobotta has a great flair for words. His descriptions put you right in the middle of the environment.
Part Indian travelogue and part flying adventure yarn, this book is a pleasant and easy read. The author writes with great wit and humour and delivers a charming (it's in the book's title!), funny story. Good value on the too.
